Senior Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer with 7-10+ years of experience to work on the
development and improvement of our second-generation robotic imaging system and support of
our existing products.  A strong analytical and problem solving skill set is required with
extensive machinery experience. The successful candidate will be a self-starter comfortable
working in a startup, cross-functional team environment to reach common objectives within
aggressive schedules and budgetary constraints.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience in the design, manufacture, commissioning
and installation of complex electromechanical systems.  This candidate will also possess superior
communications skills and is comfortable working in a matrix structure on cross functional
project teams.  He/she also has experience directing third-party product development efforts.
Familiarity with machine vision systems is a plus.  Specific experience is required in product
design and development, with a track record of working on successfully commercialized
products that are deployed in regulated environment.  Design and development expertise is
highly desirable with:

  • Robotic systems
  • Electro-mechanical sub-assembly and system development
  • Machine design
  • Control systems (for pneumatic and/or electro-mechanical systems)
  • High-precision automated inspection equipment

Duties and Resposibilities:

  • Work with third-party specialists to specify, develop, and validate new electromechanical
    concepts for use in existing and subsequent product generations
  • Develop design modifications to address field concerns, reduce system costs, and
    improve system performance
  • Develop, evaluate, and improve electro-mechanical subsystem or component designs
    under formal design control procedures
  • Hands-on troubleshooting and testing of system performance - potentially remotely at
    customer sites - in order to identify root cause and develop fixes
  • Independently collect / analyze data, compile and create appropriate reports,
    presentations, and design control documents.
  • Prepare and conduct inter-departmental training sessions
    Work within a regulated system of design controls, ECO creation and change
    management.
  • Directly interact with fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products for design evaluation, verification, and documentation.
  • Conduct regular design reviews & mentor junior level engineering
  • Work collaboratively and efficiently with cross-functional internal and external
    engineering and scientific resources
  • Work closely with Manufacturing personnel during development, design transfer and testing, and oversee the creation of assembly and work instructions to support
    manufacturing

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of experience, or MS with 7+ years
    of experience
  • 7+ years of machinery design/automation experience
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skill set is required
  • Demonstrates extensive machinery knowledge and proven ability to define weak design
    areas, propose, prototype, test and implement improvements
  • Proficiency working with PC based motion control applications; exceptional file
    management capability; experienced with all MS Office products
  • Proficient at compiling technical instructions/procedures, design specifications,
    validation documents and technical reports
  • Experience with machine controllers such as PLC's, motion controllers, remote I/O,
    magnetic/optical detection sensors.
  • Experience with control theory and implementation in pneumatic and electro-mechanical
    systems is desirable
  • Able to create electric cable/wiring and pneumatic schematics
  • Experience selecting and applying proper materials for specific design applications
  • Must demonstrate extensive disciplined experience with 3D CAD modeling system
    (SolidWorks preferred), FEA, GD&T statistical analysis
  • Ability to quickly develop new electromechanical product concepts and prototypes
  • Thermal-fluid analysis experience desirable
  • Experience with molded plastics:  materials, manufacturing processes, and tooling
  • Track record of close collaboration in manufacturing of electro-mechanical systems and molded plastics components and assemblies.
  • Willingness to contribute outside of defined job description when necessary

Work Environment:

  • Work is mainly in an office setting sitting and using computers, with some time on the
    manufacturing floor and/or in a laboratory
  • Some travel required (<10%) to vendors, customers and/or conferences
  • May need to lift objects weighing up to 30 lbs on occasion
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends on occasion to help meet critical deadlines
